The game initially drew me in with its innovative use of the DS’s features–we especially liked the plastic overlay cards with numbered holes that unlock new monsters–but then it stranded me in the land of boredom with shallow game play and repetitive mechanics. As far as I can tell from my experience on the starter island, there are no cities that are safe from conflict. From the time I started the game all the way until level 10, I was fighting for my life, running from the Bane, searching for Logos and just trying to survive. While this is fun for a certain period of time, anything–even frenetic gun battles–will become boring if there is nothing to form a counterpoint to it. Gamers who like to charge into battle while wildly button-mashing (ie: some of Koei’s other notable franchises) will not like this game. Game play skews toward the strategy side of the spectrum, and battles are not go-it-alone, one man against millions scenarios–this method will get you killed pretty quickly. Using attacks depletes energy, and you have to wait for them to replenish before you can use them again. It can be easy, especially early in the game, to leave yourself open to attacks. The plot is rather generic–you’re a Delta Force commando who has to clean up the mess created by some eggheads at a secret government research facility–and while your NPC comrades are likable, their battle skills are seriously lacking. This becomes a big problem during the based levels where you’re forced to drive and rely on their near-sighted gunnery skills to take care of enemies. Read the rest of this entry »

Uncharted reminded me a lot of an Indiana Jones movie in that both are fun and enjoyable romps that are just good enough to make you forgive their respective weaknesses. It isn’t going to completely pull Sony’s bacon out of the fire this holiday season but it is definitely a title that PS3 owners can be proud to call their own. Read the rest of this entry »
